Toccoa Falls College defeated Dallas Christian College today and completed one of the most dominate seasons we have seen in awhile. I say that about baseball, but I am going to take it even farther… That was one of the most dominate seasons of any sport we had this year. Here is a breakdown of the in-game win expectancies:

This chart obviously goes to 9 innings, and this game only goes to 7, but you get the idea. The game started with Toccoa Falls jumping on top 2-0 in the first, and that really set the tone for the game. In the second, TFC and Dallas each got a run, but as you can see, Toccoa was still in charge. As the game went on, Toccoa’s championship was becoming more and more a reality. Now, many people thought Dallas made it a game when they scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th, but the computer wasn’t deterred one bit. Toccoa was in control from beginning to end.

How is your fan base? I don’t mean your national presence, I mean your home games. Do your kids go to the games? Do your parents travel and cheer on their kids? I believe home field advantage is a fascinating variable when trying to understand and rank teams in the NCCAA DII soccer. We obviously know that basketball is effected immensely by home court advantage, but is soccer? Here is a breakdown of home field advantage from last season, and maybe we could get some discussion going about the toughest fields to play on:

If you followed men’s soccer last year than you know that Moody and Northland really put themselves up on a different plain than everyone else. It was fascinating to watch those teams battle all season. This coming year should be just as interesting. Moody looks to be a juggernaut again, but Northland, again, looks to be very good. Can anyone else compete with these two teams? Here is a way-too-early look at 2013′s top 10.

Moody Bible Institute – Mid West Region - This team has everything they need to go for another national title. With Moody’s resurgence in this decade, you have to maybe put them as the best soccer program in the country.

Northland International University – Mid West Region - The other power house program in the country is coincidently in the same region. Northland plays attractive soccer, but they need someone who can create goals if they want to beat Moody.

Ohio Christian University – Mid East Region - Ohio was very close to becoming the premier program in the country, they took a step back last year, but this team has potential to be a power, sitting in the middle of the Ohio soccer hotbed.

Manhattan Christian College – Central Region - Manhattan Christian College has struggled the last few years, but only because you expect MCC to be a top 2 team in the country. Manhattan has been very good, and will continue to be good next year.

Ozark Christian College – South West Region - Huh? This is going to be risky putting them this high, but Ozark is able to attract a lot of soccer talent from Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. If they capitalize, they could be a formidable team.

Providence College – North Central Region - Providence has struggled to maximize on expectations, but I would expect them to be a threat this year. Providence is always able to put together teams that have an identity and know what they want to do on the field.

Grace University – Central Region - Again, I will probably get crushed for this, but people don’t realize that Grace University is really investing in their athletics program. Watch out for this team going forward, they are really starting to put together good talent.

Dallas Christian College – South West Region - If a coach can organize this program and come up with a recruiting strategy, this is a sleeping giant. They always have players who have ability, but they need an identity and some consistency.

Cairn University – East Region - Cairn, the artist formerly known as Philadelphia Biblical, looks to recover from the last few years of chaos and transitions. Can Cairn get back to their national prominence?

Clearwater Christian College – South Region - Last year was the worst year for the South Region in years. Every team in the region has some big questions about their teams, and that is the reason I have them ranked so low. That doesn’t mean that I can’t be wrong about this ranking, but as of now, you can’t put a south region team high on reputation.

Clearwater is a team that the team ratings can’t quite get a read on. The burbridge loves this team, but the team ratings have them as one of the worst teams in the country. They are obviously not one of the worst. Clearwater does have a lot to bring, and they are very capable. I believe that the team ratings will eventually adjust them where they should be, but I wanted to get a look at them with a closer statistical glimpse.

Ohio Christian University took the NCCAA by storm this year. They were a classic case of a team that stats could not measure. Their talent was so strong that often times they did not have to play efficiently to win games. Congratulations to the Trailblazers for an amazing run. Here is a breakdown of the OCU season:

ORating – Points per 100 possessions

eFG% – An estimated field goal percentage that gives extra weight to 3pointers.

TOR – Turnover per 100 possessions

ORR – Offensive rebounds per 100 possessions

FT/FGA – Free throws / Field Goals Attempts

USG% – Possessions / Total team possessions

Win Shares – An estimate of the value of that player in wins.

MVP: Wesley Russell was a man this season. Easily the best player in the country by all statistical measures. You can argue with me, but I will put my money on Russell. Great player, and great find for OCU.

OCU was a guard dominated team, but Nelson produced without needing to have things ran through him. That is such a great quality in a big man. He owned the glass and cleaned up so much on defense.

The most appropriately named player in the country Trey Vaughan was fantastic in the national tournament, and he was fantastic on the season. What a weapon for a team who has a full arsenal of weapons. The one thing that Vaughan could do to improve his game is develop a driving/pull up game.

Watch out for Kenny Cooper, as his playing time increases and he cuts down on turnovers, you could see him developing into a star for OCU.

Congratulations to Maranatha Baptist Bible College! They had an unbelievable run to the national title game. The team ratings had them ranked 5-7 all year-long, but everyone knew as soon as they started playing more NCCAA DII games, they were going to rocket up the rankings. They made their move on the number one spot in the country after the regional championships, and didn’t look back after that.

Here is a look at their season stats and how they came to be the top overall team in the country:

ORating – Points per 100 possessions

eFG% – An estimated field goal percentage that gives extra weight to 3pointers.

TOR – Turnover per 100 possessions

ORR – Offensive rebounds per 100 possessions

FT/FGA – Free throws / Field Goals Attempts

USG% – Possessions / Total team possessions

Win Shares – An estimate of the value of that player in wins.

MVP: You could easily give it to Autumn Peotter because she performed slightly better throughout the season, but we can’t do that. The Big Three deserve a shared MVP, and from everything I know about this team, that’s exactly as they would want it. Autumn Peotter, Torey DeLozier, and Laci Peterson get the season MVP. Their shared sacrifice and production made this team very special.

Laci Peterson was the x-factor this season. I remember last year saying they needed to learn how to use her in the offense more, and sure enough, the USG% shows that they did that. It looks as though they let DeLozier get her production from outside the offense, and really looked to run things into Laci Peterson more.

Torey DeLozier is a weapon that teams don’t usually have at this level. A production machine that doesn’t need the ball to get hers. Really great player.
