Here are the new power ratings. I am ready and willing to hear all hate my way. This is what the numbers say, and I know that it will be controversial. Check out the men’s power ratings, and you can also check out what is going on over on the women’s side of things:

Okay, the fact that Grace Bible continues to come up as the #1 team means there are serious issues with whatever equations you are using to calculate the power rankings.
Not necessarily… they could be right.
Im not seeing the power ratings
…
You need to Click on the “Men’s Power Ratings” to see them.
Grace is still the team to beat no matter what poll or rankings you look at. They are the 3x defending National Champions. They play the toughest schedule and they always win when it counts.
Grace is going to sweep the regional tournament this weekend…don’t buy into any rankings hype. No one has beaten us in postseason play since 2008. Grace is still #1 in our hearts.
Also, watch for Kuyper to exit in the regional semifinals this week.
Over-rated…clap, clap, clap-clap-clap
The Power Ratings agree with you.
Yes, Grace is still the defending champions until someone else wins the championship. But that does not mean that they are the best team THIS year. That is what the power ratings are right? The best team right now? I don’t see how the past three years have ANYTHING to do with this year. Yeah they were good for the past three years, they are still a very good team and have a very good shot at winning the championship again. But they are a different team this year than they have been the past three, their record shows that.
These ratings only take into account this year. The ratings are designed to be predictive. What the are saying is that the “money” is still on Grace Bible to cut down the nets, as of right now. Obviously fans of teams think differently, but the computer is unbiased.
I just don’t see how the money can still be on Grace when they’ve lost twice to the same team and a third time to an unranked team. Even people who aren’t fans of Kuyper think that it’s a little fishy. If you were only looking at this year then you have to say that Grace cannot be #1. Yes they are still a good team and yes they should still be top 5, probably #3. But continuing to have them at #1 is not accurate.
Please keep in mind Grace’s first loss to Kuyper was mostly due to coaching. He benched his starters for over 10 minutes and played the Freshmen. Not saying Kuyper didn’t do a great job… but if their coach wasn’t trying to prove a point to his players it would have been totally different.
“Grace is still #1 in our hearts” Grace can keep their ratings in their “hearts” and everyone else will follow the actual ratings. You can say you haven’t lost in postseason play since 2008, you have three rings and congrats no one can take those from you. But its time Grace fans and Cole McGee regognize that Grace is no longer the best team. Grace fans are ignorant and frankly they’ve been spoiled with the success they’ve had.
Ps. I dont know how you can be “over-rated” if you have beaten the number 1 team twice, and are still number 3 in these rankings. Unless you are taking about Gracce, i totally agree.
If you’re talking SOS, Arlington Baptist has a larger SOS than Grace…Grace is a consistent team, but there are dents in their armor this year as is visible by losing to Kuyper and Moody.
It makes sense if you think about it. GBC plays a tough schedule and has more quality wins than bad losses.
The frustrating thing about these power ratings is the fact that there is no consistency. For example, Grace can lose 2 games vs a rival NCCAA team and never change position, while a team like Hillsdale that has 1 road loss vs a rival in 10 games and is dropped out of the the top 10. And the “computer” predicts the winner of the SW region…go figure.
Julius- the ratings aren’t inconsistent because the computer can’t be inconsistent. The formula is based on different parts that, when put together, give you the power ratings result. It’s not saying that Hillsdale isn’t a good team just their NCCAA losses hurt worse than their best NCCAA wins help. The good news is that regional tourneys are this weekend and last time I checked the computer can’t play the region tournaments.
Finally someone who understands how this works.
Ahhh…I see. So their 2 NCCAA losses to ranked teams are more damaging than the 14 wins that include a win against those same 2 teams they lost to. I understand the computer can only dictate results from the formula that it has to work with. It is my contention that the formula is set up to favor those teams who are dual affiliated and play a very limited number of NCCAA schools. When one team can lose twice and not move, and another lose once and drop 6 places, it just doesn’t look right.
North Central plays a very strong D3 schedule and we are sitting at #12 after a strong season. I wouldn’t say that the computer is biased one way or the other. Plus, it’s not like these rankings decide anything, they’re just something interesting to look at/talk about. If it bothers you that much just don’t come to this site, just look at the coaches poll and leave it at that. Cole has said many times that this is supposed to be predictive of what will happen, it’s not a top 25 ranking, it’s a “power ranking”. Who the computer thinks will win the championship, not who has had the best season so far.
ugh… the coaches poll is what upsets me HAHA
All of you can just take a chill pill because Moody is coming out on top with the best player in the league Steve Harrison hoisting the trophy!
I agree with Jake. Moody has a good first round draw with GLCC and if they get hot they can take down anyone as evidenced by their handling in Grace last week. Steve Harrison is the best scorer in the league and if they can get some help from Crabtree and Horn, I think they could win the regionals. It would have to be the perfect storm though.
In the eyes of the computer the two losses for Hillsdale (Dallas, Manhattan) hurt their power rating because of where those teams are in the power rating. For example, those losses wouldn’t hurt as bad if Manhattan and Dallas both were undefeated in NCCAA play, but because both of those schools have bad losses to NCCAA schools then Hillsdale losing to those schools hurts much more than them beating them.
So if the argument is that the losses are more important than the wins, then why didn’t Grace fall from the #1 spot after a loss to an unranked team? It’s not the “eyes” of the computer that I have a complaint with, but more the methodology used to get the result. Losses to unranked schools should affect all teams the same way. I believe that the NCCAA Coaches Poll is much more accurate indicator than this computer model.
I understand that people get sick of reading about the MidWest Region all the time, but the fact of the matter is that this Regional Tournament is one of the most anticipated in recent history. You’ve got teams that all have different things to prove…it should be very exciting. Each team in this league has a chip on their shoulder for different reasons and I am excited to see how it all goes! I believe Northland is webcasting each game…true or false?
#midwestregionisdeepest
That is true that they will be webcasting all the games
Interesting to read Kyle’s post, he is great guy and I have great respect for him and the Grace program. First of all–all games are webcasted. We may have play by play for some. Not sure if we have “chips” on our shoulders
in the Midwest Region, but the amazing thing is that the number 7 team in the region [Lincoln] was runner up in the region last year–to the eventual National Champion Grace…the point is every game is a war. Whoever wins this region will have to WIN it.
Pete they should just mic you up during all the games – that would be great entertainment!
Thanks Shawn…
When will they announce the MidWest Region awards?
I could be wrong, but I believe in the Midwest region, the announce them between the two semifinal games.
Pete,
Man, if I would have been thinking about this early enough I would have contacted you to come up and do the color commentating for the games! I would have loved that since I am taking some time off from coaching…could I do it without being biased??? haha that would be tough but I think I could pull through…maybe another time! Good luck this weekend
MW region: things to look for:
1. Can the young guns from Maranatha put together a few good games and beat some people? (tough D# schedule toughens them up for this Tourny every year)
2. Can Kuyper keep their great season cruising along and show that their big wins were not a flash in the pan? (big plans at Nationals?)
3. Looks like Northland’s offense isn’t the problem…but can they defend someone and move on at home? (one of the toughest places to play)
4. Can Lincoln make it to the Regional Championship like last year, and get over the hump?
5. Can GLCC sneak a few wins and shock some people? (well documented on this site that they beat Kuyper earlier)
6. Can GBC’s seniors make it to a fourth NCCAA Nat Tournament and make a run at 4 stright rings after taking a few losses late in the season? (Time to show they can rise above)
7. Can Moody build on the win they got last week against GBC? (going in with some good feelings)
If Dunbar, Wisc wasn’t so far away I’d be there…
The region this year really reminds me of the Big Ten. Everyone seems capable of beating, or already has beaten, any team on any given night. Should make for an exciting tournament.
Big ten basketball sets basketball back 20 years. dont make me puke…
Truth
Big Ten is going to get 8 teams in the tourny and even Bilas said the Big10 was best league right now.
No… the big ten was the best league in the country last month… since then OSU stinks! IU Stinks! Wisky Stinks! Purdue … Stinks! they may get 8 in the tourney but they’ll be out quick…
Big Ten basketball is how the game is supposed to be played. It starts on defense, and if you get a stop then you think about scoring. Defense wins Championships, Offense gets on a highlight reel.
HAhAHA i find it hard to believe shooting 30 percent and turning the ball over 20 times a game is how the game is supposed to be played. and when did the Big 10 last win a championship?
Blevins don’t be mad just because ohio got beat by both Michigan teams last week
woaaaah dont you DARE!!!! confuse me with a buckeye fan!!! Im from North Carolina and i bleed Tar Heel blue!
Is there a schedule for the Midwest Regionals?
Today’s schedule is
Great Lakes vs. Moody 2pm
Grace Bible vs. Lincoln 4pm
Kuyper vs. Emmaus 6pm
Maranatha vs. Northland 8pm
Those times are all central time
I don’t know what time the games are after that though
HAHA… Central time.. guess i shoulda read that…
The big key to GBC still being on top, was how dominate they were over the 2nd ranked team. TWICE! their big margin of strength in the old power rankings gave them enough cushion to suffer the two losses to Kuyper.. i never imagined that it’d protect them with the Moody loss.. but if Moody gets beat today… which.. nope they just won in OT then GBC would have most likely fell.
thats me trying to explain Cole’s 1985 computer that has Oregon Trail on it…
and im still stick to my stomach over the big 10 non-since quote…
Hey I agree that the Big Ten is definitely not the most stylish conference, but the fact that anyone can beat anyone on any given night is the comparison I was going for.
I would not say they dominated Valley Forge twice..By all accounts Valley Forge was up 17 points in their first meeting I would not call that dominating and they won the game by 2 points..Second meeting by 11
So I checked out the stats
First game VfCC shot 61% from 3 and 52 % from 2 while Grace shots 37% from 3 and 50 from 2..Up by 19 points with 14 mins to go..VFCC let that game slip away…Second matchup def goes to Grace but I would not say an 11 point win is dominating..I think Grace has more weaknesses and might get exposed in the tournament
I agree on the weakness… but thats a 30 point swing… thats dominate. Boyce had OCU down at Boyce by 20 at half earlier this year… and they won by 30… i still think thats dominating
COME ON BLEVINS…stop hating on the patriots!!!!!!grace is overrated!!!!!
IM not hating at all. GBC coming back from 19 down in 14 minutes is dominate. lol I have VFCC as my Number one team in the country right now
Forge
Kuyper
Grace
OCU
Clearwater
Manhattan
FCC
Hillsdale
Grace U
Dallas
gross
mike blevins is CCSN!
No no… i am most defiantly not CCSN. Cole and Trent are CCSN
GO VALLEY FORGE!
Regardless of who sits atop the power rankings, who has or has not won 3 national championships in a row, or who has beat who, big props are due to the teams who go out and get full time students to come to their campus and play basketball on the side. True nccaa student athletes need to be recognized and praised beyond a record or ranking.
So if Grace loses today where would they get seeded?..Im thinking VFCC and Kuyper have to be above them so would it be a 3 or even lower?..Central Bible gets the 4 Im assuming because its at their place…So could Grace fall under 5 if they lose.
VFCC should be the number one seed in the tournament. VFCC has been on a roll the last few weeks..Grace beat VFCC twice early in the season..I heard someone from CCSN say that you can throw out first semester stats sometimes…Grace lost to Kuyper twice and Moody..Yes did they just win the championship today but the seeding should be based on the what have you done lately
Looks like Kuyper and Clearwater will be receiving at large bids to Nationals. Seeding should be very interesting. Great day of tournament games.
I’m not sure what Grace Bible team showed up for the two losses against Kuyper, or the one last week against Moody, but the Tigers that showed up to Dunbar this weekend are clearly the best in the nation. I saw the MW Championship today and it boggles my mind that Kuyper could have beat Grace twice. GBC is the #1 team going into nationals.
