Can someone please explain BBC PA passing Maranatha? I asked how they were tied last week and got nothing. What do these girls have to do to get some respect?! They are currently 6-0 in the NCCAA and 7-9 in a conference most NCCAA II schools couldn’t even compete in!
Hey Clint! It is probably worth noting that BBC (PA) WILL NOT be participating in the NCCAA II Women’s National Basketball Tournament. So the fact that they have moved up to #2 in the polls is really insignificant. Maranatha will be the #2 seed at nationals at OCU in a few weeks.
BBC (PA) is a very good basketball team. I think a Maranatha/BBC (PA) match-up could have gone either way. Not sure what allowed BBC to “jump” Maranatha this week, but the teams are very similar.
I agree with VFCC Fan that it would be nice to see Maranatha against some of the elite of the NCCAA II in the regular season. I know they can’t do much because of their dual-affiliation with the NCAA III. It would be beneficial if they could find a way to fit the Super 8 Classic at KCU or even the Hersha Hospitality Tournament at Valley Forge into their schedule. Maybe that isn’t feasible because of travel or scheduling, I don’t know.

Just curious,
Why is BBC not going to nationals? Is it because they have to attend an NCAA D3 tournament instead? Seems like it would help the overall competitiveness of the tournament to have a team of their caliber in there. Just a thought.
Looking at both teams (MBBC and BBC) they seem to be quite even. Main diffeence I see is that BBC is now tied for 1st place in their D3 conference. they are also 10-3 this semester. not sure what else is different though besides their record which is also close. MBBC is 8-5. And there is no disrespect to MBBC, they are still ranked third and will be ranked 2nd at nationals unless they somehow lose their region which I don’ foresee happening!
The NCCAA WBB is tough to guage when, like others said, teams don’t play other NCCAA schools. Its tough when other teams jump to D3 and some colleges stay behind for a number of reasons. Here is a thought though, have the NCCAA host a preseason NIT with 8 teams or two sepearate NIT’s with four teams each all from differnt regions. The top teams who are able to play will play. Coop already mentioned it but Hersha and Super 8 give you that preseason NIT type of feel. I would like to see more NCCAA teams participate in those tournaments like you mention coop.
I am wondering how North Central is on the list? They are 6-13, and were beaten soundly by Valley Forge. Another team from the East should be on this list…Lancaster!
MBBC needs to get to some of the earlier tournaments and play some NCCAA teams so their talent can be put up against the better teams. Also, I think BBC has a better record even in their NCAA lll division than Maranatha has.
VFCCfan,
The problem with MBBC playing in the early tournaments is 2-fold. On the one hand, as it is, our team is comprised nearly half of vball players – DeLozier, Peterson, Nelson (starters) and Steurwald and Steward (reserves that get good minutes). So they barely even get practices in before the season starts. This season, the vball players had FOUR practices before the first game of the season. So, you can understand the difficulty of just not having players or having players who haven’t been in practice and after 4 practices wouldn’t show very well at an early tournament. The second problem comes from the scheduling limits of being dual affiliated. There are only so many non-conference games we can play, and those (for the most part) are nearly always used for Region games because the MW region is so large. I would like to see MBBC and BBC go head to head. It sounds like it would be a great match up. But I would also like to see BBC match up with some of the teams in Maranatha’s conference, because even though I know BBC is D3, there is a WIDE variety of difficulty level in D3 and I know the NAC is on the “quite difficult” side.
Clint….sounds a little like bias on your part. Most teams playing in the NCCAA have players that are playing dual sports whether it be VB or Soccer. VF had at least 4 of their 10 players playing before their season(with 3 of them being starters) and yet got out to many of the preseason tournaments, not being concerned about how they “show”.
BBC, I am sure has the same situation with dual affiliation, but still made a point of attending the Hersha Tournament. Now I do realize that they are very close in proximity to this tournamnet which makes it easier, but I am sure if Maranatha made it a priority, they could make it to these tournaments and use them as tune-ups for the season. To ask BBC to make an effort to play teams in Maranatha’s conference without Maranatha making an effort to attend any tournaments is a bit biased.
I think you slightly misunderstood me. I’m not asking BBC to play NAC schools, I’m making the point that the NAC schools are considerably better D3 schools than some other dual affiliated teams. And yes, BBC played in the Hersha Invitational….2.5 hours from their campus. When BBC is ready to attend a tournament in the Chicago area let me know. You’re asking Maranatha to drive 14.5 hours for a tournament. And as far as “showing well” the point that was made was that by MBBC showing up to an early season tournament could show how they compare to other teams, which is why I made the point that it wouldn’t be an accurate representation. The inability to go to tournaments comes down to 1) inability to schedule non-conference games and out of region games (as I said before, we use our non conference schedule for MW Region games). 2) Budget. That is part of why we play in a conference because it saves on travel expenses. Athletics budget already pays to send vball almost every year to nationals, usually women’s soccer, sometimes both, and baseball/softball spring trips just so they can get some extra games in and then girl’s bball to national’s pretty much every year. I guarantee if the tournament was 2.5 hours away there’s a good chance Natha would be there.
One point of clarification on the Midwest Region Clint……MBBC is only required to play each team in the region 1 time. Many NCCAA II regions play 2 games against each opponent (home and home) so I don’t think it’s the commitment to the Midwest Region that is keeping this from happening. It’s the NCAA III commitment that’s the problem. I believe that NCAA III commitment limits regular season contests to 25 games. It’s hard to give up 3 of those 25 games in mid-November to 3 teams outside your region and conference.
I highly doubt that the availability of 2-sport athletes like DeLozier and Peterson has kept MBBC out of early season tournaments. I think it has everything to do with scheduling issues and $$$—it’s not cheap to get an
entire team from Watertown to Phoenixville, PA or Grayson, KY.
Unfortunately, with Valley Forge going NCAA III as well, I think we will see less of them at some of these out-of-region tournaments as well. From what I’ve been told, Valley Forge isn’t going to back to KCU next November for the Super 8 Classic (Grace Bible isn’t going back either so that tournament just lost most of its luster). I have not heard whether Valley Forge plans to continue to play in the annual tourney between the Assemblies Of God Schools.

Coop with the scoop!
I agree. I think it has more to do with budget and scheduling. And I agree with your assessment of the MW Region analysis too. I was trying to say that but you said it better than I did. I was just pointing out that we basically have to use our non-conference games to play region teams rather than the tournaments and/or out of region teams. The guys had the chance to play an out of region game against Faith of Ankeney which could help them secure an at-large for nationals. The girls don’t usually have to worry about that as Coach Mo has pretty much owned the Midwest Region for the last decade or so.
Lol… only one east team allowed…
