why not chime in…full disclosure up front, I’m an NIU fan. So if that discredits all I say, so be it.
Regarding the OCU-NIU game I appreciated your comments on the clock issue. Disappointing that it is what stands out about the game. I’ll give my thoughts, but then a few comments on the game itself:
With the clock malfunction both the rule book and logic would say, turn it off and let the center ref control the clock. As a spectator watching the second half there were a ton of stoppages and so I didn’t feel like too much time had elapsed. OCU killed themselves by fouling over and over again. Like Cole said here there just was no place for the ref to end that game in the flow of play and NIU was able to bury the ball.
On the play of the game itself:
OCU had one sometimes two attackers who looked really dangerous especially in the first half, but throughout. NIU defenders all did well in the end to make the crucial tackle(esp. #7 Jason Lorch) but had a few dangerous mistakes that could have been fatal.
NIU dominated the possession, played the ball through Netz and outside mids and was able to get a lot of shots (OCU’s keeper was fantastic). That said both Conover (#5PR) and Doran (#8PR) didn’t get the touches you want in the second half. If Saturday they are able to play through the triangle up the middle of Netz, Doran, and Conover up top it is a lot of weapons to stop.
Saturday is going to be a great match-up!
Really enjoy all the effort you guys are doing to produce and comment on the games! Keep it up!
bottom line ohio won the game, can’t defend against 12 men
Wait!? ohio won? i thought the game ended in pks?
.. in fact that “12th man” called a pk FOR Ohio at one point.
It would be crazy hard to defend a guy who plays for both teams.
game ended 2 minutes before niu tied it up, everyone knows it, just some people would prefer to attack and devert the attention away from the clock issue and instead talk about who did what on the field, and dont tell me you wouldnt feel that way if it was your team, as i said before i havnt attacked or took any shots at the NIU team or thier play they played hard and did what they were allowed to do. it looks to me anyon that disagrees with me onlky has comments about how OCU this or OCU that but no real response to the fact that clock went out at 50 somthing secounds and niu scored 3 minutes after that, even if rules did allowe for stopage time that saying in the last 53 secounds there was 2 minutes of stopage even, come on seriuos look at tape. up untill the last 50 somtihng secounds the clock was stopped for injuies, cards etc so you cant say it was for earlier issues.. NIu should be proud of thier boys, all teams should this isnt about what happen during the play of game or bad calls which always happen this is about a major mismanagment of the clock and allowing it to continue, i just sorry the ars didnt refuse to continue whe they knew a wrongf was being done, if they would have said no more and as a group went to the officals of the tourney then it would have had to been delt with then and there but instead the chose to continue, i think the one that talked to me honsetky though someone would step in afterwards and deal with it… of course we all know that didnt and wouldnt happen.,
Just a question: has the rule been changed that a player does NOT have to be on the field at the end of overtime to be eligible to shoot in PKs? If that rule has NOT been changed, then Ohio used 2 ineligible shooters.
They did change it. 3 years ago. I was shocked. I thought that was a legit rule.
Thanks Trent! I submitted this game to SportsCenter for their consideration for top plays because of the magnitude of the game and the CRAZY way in which it ended!
They changed it to what? I just want to make sure this is right so we don’t have problems with future games. This is what the 2010-2011 ncaa rule book says…
A.R. 14.2.a. May a substitute be allowed to take a penalty kick in a game in which
play has been extended? RULING: No, only a player who was on the field when
time expired shall take the kick.
Is it different for nccaa?
Torey DeLozier is clearly the best player in the NCCAA! Without DeLozier, MBBC isn’t even close to the national tournament. Without Emma Kile, Clearwater is still in the national tournament.
Go to NCAA.com and look at the kills leader in the NCCAA Div 3… Torey Delozier’s name is on the top of kills/set and points/set by far.
Where is Emma Kile? I’m not debating that she is very good, but Maranatha would be a nobody without DeLozier.
Torey DeLozier got robbed. Without doubt.
It makes me laugh that fans would comment on the fouls and so called language that we used. I lost alot of respect for Northland and the program. Our coach made sure that we were silent throughout the game. In fact we were commended for this. Rules are rules, and the game went several minutes, not seconds, but minutes longer than it was supposed to. I was impressed with the play by number 1 up top for Northland and the keeper during penalties. But there is no doubt who that game game belonged to and there has never been any doubt in the past two years. God does these things for a reason and I have to remember this. But when a referee is getting chewed out by even the assistant refs, you know there is a problem. Hats off to Northland for there penalties. Im afraid thats all I can give them. NUI fans, cheered well and i understand the feeling of entitlement, but before you make accusations of our character, lets not forget that the reason nobody else in the tournament was asside NUI players is because of the lack of respect earned, dirty play and constant whinning at the referee, who might I had, was a key involvement in that game
Northland complains to the refs a lot…I’ll give you that. As a fan it’s annoying…sometimes I just want to tell them to shut up. But as annoying as it is to hear them…I know for a fact that they don’t play dirty. They play good, physical soccer. Daniel Doran and Jason Lorch work their butts off and will do whatever they can to win. Matt Patz is just huge…so if you get hit by him…you might think he’s dirty, but really he’s just the Incredible Hulk playing soccer.
As an NIU fan…I might be biased…whatever. But watching them hit the ball off the metal (I think at least 2 times…can’t remember exactly)…they had incredible scoring chances, and I felt like they dominated the whole second half…just an opinion…you don’t have to agree.
I think one thing we all do really well on this website is complain…(I’m talking about both teams). Leave the crap on the field…it is over. Complaining on a blog won’t do anything for you or anybody else.
Seriously…it was a great game by both teams.
P.S.- Steve Fabian…you are a beast.
With respect to the game it was well played by both teams they both had good plays but OCU had it at the end. There is no doubt about that. The game lasted until NIU scored then was ended promptly afterwords. What happened was a disgrace to this tournament and to this league.
Im making this post on both threads that i have been posting on….I am done talking about it, we all know what happened happen and no matter it wont change everyone knows what really happened
DCC men are not in shape but if they were they would be nationals champs. Barrientos for Dcc is a very underrated player he made the ocu defense look silly. but i think that this year champs would go to MBI!!! GO MBI

Officially the game will/should go on both teams record as a tie and NIU advances on penalty kicks.
SO QUIT SAYING OCC LOST AND NIU WON! haha
Oh and all OCC had to do was tell the official at the beginning of the game that Patz doesn’t wear shin guards.
not saying he does wear them, I know I personally gave him quite a few kicks to the shin in practice, but I thought he just took them out before the pks. Someone who was there might have the real scoop on that though.
… its OCU Bill… is OCU… lol
Lol
Okay … what’s up with the “no name needed” label? You said some pretty intense stuff dude (or dudette). You should have the courage to use your name. And … here are two more thoughts … how about viewing what happened in the end through the eyes of providence or sovereignty or just someone bigger than you or me or NIU or OCU or even the ref. And secondly, how we response to this is more important than the event itself. It is a heart revealer. A revealer of what we truly worship … might I suggest it comes back to worshipping “me” at some level? Just a thought. Today MBI and NIU will play for the third time this year. Wow. Hopefully both will play hard and fair and leave the results to the One Who decides (oh … and maybe an instrument we call a referee might have an influence in accomplishing His will too). Ultimately, IT IS NOT ABOUT US. Ours is to do our best and respond to His choice with dignity and grace.
Good Luck Northland!! I hope you win the whole thing. If OCU cannot do it, win big!! OCU, go out there and never let your foot off the gas. Prove that you deserved better, do not argue about it!!!
Everyone keeps mistaking Northland’s time of possession in the second half for dominance. It was a “bend, but not break” change in strategy by OCU that in hind sight, may will be second guessed. I wish they would have gone ahead and tried to run up the score and proved how “villanous” they can be.
My biggest disappointment though is that after beating Northland 3 straight times (over 2 years) and having to go to PK’s in this game, which the moderators even admit “jobbed” OCU… at the end of it, 2 out of 3 do not believe OCU to be an equal of Northland… If you do not like their tactics and methods, that is your opinion, but it took a ref’s mistake to give Northland the opportunity to beat OCU…
It should have been the championship game with a better officiating crew…..
Good Luck to both teams and God Bless!!!
I am with you on this point. I think OCU and NIU were extremely competitive. OCU had a few opportunities that one more good touch, or a defender closing one step slower, or one fingertip less and it could have easily been 3 or 4 goals instead of just 2. NIU also had a lot of good chances, if it wasn’t especially for OCU’s keeper, they might have put in 3 or 4 as well.
In the end the game finished 2-2 and after PKs NIU moves on.
I definitely think these teams performed on a similar level and hope they will continue to play each other and keep this “rivalry” or competition going.
Look I sick of hearing about this on facebook and on hear Ive played on one of these teams in pass years. Ocu no matter what Niu won with pks no matter what happen with extra mins you gave the game away with pks.
some players on Ocu dont deserve a national championship! the only one that i say really really does is jim Galvan
Congratulations Coach Harding and Moody. Great game MBI and NIU. Joe – my prayers are with you.
Great tournament.
Thanks to CCSN for the webcasts that allowed family and friends keep up with the tournaments.
Thankfully the best team won this tournament, and in classy fashion. Big congrats to Coach Joe Harding! He’s been through a lot lately. The Moody Nation is proud tonight!
It irritates me that fans/parents question the character of the players from both sides on the field that night. Seriously just shut your mouths, you clearly don’t know anything and frankly you’re embarrassing yourselves. Be supportive of your team and your child, and leave it at that.
Both sides went hard that night, and as an OCU Senior I know I gave it everything I had. NIU always gives us a good game, and its actually nice to go up against a physical team for a change. I respect their players, they want to win just as bad we do, and their work ethic shows that. Sure they play dirty, just like everyone else in this league. If the referee would have made a mistake hurting them instead of us, as a competitor, I would have continued to compete. One fan did mention to me after the game that it would have been cool for NIU to observe the devastating mistake made by the center referee, and to give their spot in the championship to OCU. Haha, but let’s get serious, we all went to Florida to win!
And to say that OCU’s players don’t “deserve” a national championship? Who are you kidding… Every team that makes it to Nationals DESERVES a national championship, that’s why they are there being allowed to compete.
Referees will never be perfect, and bad calls will continue to be called. At the end of the day, this is a man’s game and we leave it between the lines. The tournament was very organized and ran efficiently by the NCCAA, I appreciate that as well as the hard work by the grounds crew and everyone else. Thank you to the NCCAA for providing intercollegiate athletic competition in a Christian perspective. Nothing will ever come close to what I experienced as a member of my team. I learned so much about life and what it means to be a Christian Man from my Coach.
P.S. – Steven Fabian IS a beast.
